New features include recording up to 60 seconds with the Shorts camera

The Google-owned platform first launched Shorts in India in September 2020, to capitalize on the ban of the Bytedance-owned TikTok in the country. YouTube claims Shorts has since surpassed 6.5 billion daily views globally.

“We want to make it easy and fun to create Shorts. As we continue to build Shorts alongside our creators and artists, we’ll be adding more features for users to try”, said Todd Sherman, the global product manager for YouTube Shorts.

“We know that it will take us time to get this right, and we’re just getting started. We can’t wait for you to try Shorts and help us build a first-class short-form video experience right on YouTube.”

What is YouTube Shorts?

  • It allows users to upload 15-second or less short-form videos using a set of creator tools, including a multi-segment camera, speed controls and a timer with a countdown feature.

  • Like TikTok, videos can be set to music, using YouTube’s large library of audio content.

  • The multi-segment camera lets users string together multiple video clips into one short clip. The other controls enable YouTube creators to be more creative than if they simply pressed a ’record’ button.

  • Further features include recording up to 60 seconds with the Shorts camera, adding text to videos, auto captions, the ability to add clips from users’ phone gallery and a selection of basic filters.
