Jio Platforms and Meta launch a first-ever WhatsApp shopping experience

In a first-of-its-kind initiative that will revolutionize Indian retail, Meta and Jio Platforms have announced the launch of the end-to-end shopping experience on WhatsApp.

India is one of WhatsApp’s largest markets, but monetization has been a mixed bag of challenges. Business messaging may well be the answer, and this launch could mark the first step toward it becoming a super app. With nearly 500 million WhatsApp users in the country, it could be the perfect market for launch.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Jio owner Reliance Industries, said: “Our vision is to propel India as the world’s leading digital society.”

He added: “This partnership between Jio platforms and Meta is part of that shared vision of bringing more people and businesses online and creating truly innovative solutions that will add convenience to the daily lives of every Indian.“

In a Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg of WhatsApp owner Meta said: “This is our first-ever end-to-end shopping experience on WhatsApp – people can now buy groceries from JioMart right in a chat.”

He added: “Business messaging is an area with real momentum, and chat-based experiences like this will be the go-to way people and businesses communicate in the years to come.”
