A $500m fundraising campaign for hospital-based mental health research, said to be the largest ever, has been amassed to tackle a mental health crisis which threatens to reach epidemic proportions.

Canada’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is launching ‘No one left behind’, developed in partnership with Toronto-based ad agency Camp Jefferson, to help build a cutting-edge research center and prove to people that they are not alone.

Sarah Chamberlin, CAMH foundation’s CMO said: “Our work over the past 25 years has helped to bust stigma, raise awareness and spark conversations about mental health. Now it’s time to go further.”

Camp Jefferson ECD Julie Nikolic, adds: “We wanted this campaign to call out to those who share the same ambition and attitude of the very people who are fighting daily to uncover new cures for those living with, and affected by, mental illness.”

Running across the province of Ontario until the end of May the campaign is being prompted by the realization that over half the population of Canada will have dealt with some form of mental illness by the age of 40, with 11 people a day losing their lives to suicide.

Canada's experience echoes that of the world more broadly with shocking statistics from the World Health Organisation which show that more than 450m people worldwide are struggling with mental illness, including increasing numbers from within the advertising industry.
